A few pointers to help you enjoy your trip fully
Orkney is a beautiful group of islands. Our constantly changing light and shade has inspired great works of art for centuries. We are, though, 59o North of the Equator and surrounded by seas, this means temperatures are normally in the range of 5-15o Centigrade (say 40o– 60o Fahrenheit) so please take this into account before setting out! Sometimes it can feel much colder because of the wind as well! See BBC weather forecasts for current weather.
5,000 years of wear and tear mean some of our beautiful sites are on uneven ground so we recommend stout footwear.
We love showing off our excellent cuisine in small intimate restaurants, pubs, hotels and cafes. Food is cooked to order so please let us know of you have particular preferences or needs.
Our 5,000 year monuments are cared for by our national agency, Historic Scotland. Don’t forget your membership cards if you’re a member of the equivalent body in other parts of the British Isles as you can get reduced or free entry.
